 Youth Council

Youth council is provided by the Youth centers around the province and also nationally to teach aboriginal youth about their rights, history about their culture, leadership training, and also gaining a healthier future for Aboriginal Youth by being a voice to take action and making positive changes.

At our meetings we talk about our goals for the future of the program as well as the youth in this area.

Choices goals presently are to get our youth council up and running, getting the youth in fundraising, organizing events like dances ect. We also want to get youth involved in positive activities like helping prepare weekly dinners and clean-up afterwards.

Our future goals are to have an established Youth Council with the youth like electing a president, vice president, ect. Have the youth chairing the meetings, taking notes, logging those notes, identifying things that the youth want to change, not only in the youth center but in the community as well. We want to eventually get into the cultural aspects with the youth eg. sweats, drumming, drum making...) and we also would like to eventually go on field trips with money raised from fundraising.

The structure of Choices for Youth operates so that we can allow the youth to gain more from the experience every week:

• Positions (ex. taking notes at the meetings, active participation...)
• Rewards / Acknowledgement (ex. movie passes, dinner and a movie, gift certificates)
• How often to meet and when
• How meetings are organized
• Trips
• Going to Timber wolves games
• Having incentive
• Works shops (ex. "Crystal Meth" public information forum)
• Games (x-box and PS2)

Within the program, we also need to fundraise to follow through with the activities that the youth want to participate in. The following are some that the youth have thought for ideas.

• Hotdog sale / Bake sale
• Garage Sale
• Car wash
